World No Tobacco Day 2025: Time to Face the Truth and Give Ourselves a Fresh Start

By Dr. Fahad Ahmed Khan

Family Medicine Consultant – Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC)

Every year, World No Tobacco Day reminds us of something important: our health is priceless, and it’s never too late to make a change. This year, under the World Health Organization’s theme:

“Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products,”

we’re standing together to call out the tricks tobacco companies use—especially the way they target young people with products that harm their health and steal years from their lives.

Why This Day Matters

At our clinic, we meet brave people every day who’ve decided to say, “Enough.” They want a better life—for themselves and for the people they love. And we’re here to walk that journey with them, step by step.

What We Do at SKMC

At the Smoking Cessation Clinic in Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, we don’t just offer treatment—we offer real, human support. Our team of doctors and specialists, trained both locally and internationally, treats every patient like family.

We help people quit:

  • Cigarettes
  • Midwakh
  • Shisha
  • Vaping

And we use advanced tools like:

  • The Smokalyzer to measure carbon monoxide in the breath
  • Lung function tests (spirometry)
  • Vascular health checks
  • Chest X-rays and lab tests to detect any damage caused by smoking

We also provide:

  • Nicotine replacement options like patches and gum
  • Medications to support quitting
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy with mental health experts
  • Referrals to specialists in heart, lung, urology, and cancer care
  • Early screenings for smoking-related cancers like lung, colon, and prostate cancer

Who’s Most at Risk?

Unfortunately, it’s young people and teens who are being targeted the most. With sweet flavours and trendy designs, tobacco companies are making these products look cool and harmless. That’s why awareness and education are so important.

What Are the Health Risks?

Smoking doesn’t just affect your lungs. It damages your heart, blood vessels, immune system, digestion, and even sexual health. It also increases the risk of many types of cancer. The effects are serious—but they’re also preventable.

Can You Really Quit?

Yes, 100%. Even if you’ve tried before and didn’t succeed, that’s okay. Every attempt brings you closer to success. We’re here to support you, not judge you. Everyone deserves a second chance, better health, and a longer, happier life.

Our Community Initiatives

At SKMC, we don’t just wait for people to come to us. We go out into the community—through awareness campaigns, workshops, and partnerships with schools and government organisations—to help build a healthier UAE.

A Personal Message from Dr. Fahad Ahmed Khan

“Every day, I see hope in the eyes of people who decide to quit smoking. I see strength. I see change. If you’re thinking about quitting, know that you’re not alone. We’re here to help, to encourage you, and to celebrate every step you take. Don’t wait for tomorrow, start today. For yourself, and for the people who love you.”
